Broadly speaking, I am interested in cognitive models of relationship and culture. With my colleagues, I have researched these topics especially through embodied and nonconscious processes. For example, people in physically warmer conditions are more attenuated to engage in relationships (IJzerman & Semin, 2009), but those who feel psychologically closer to others also estimate ambient temperatures as higher (IJzerman & Semin, 2010; for an overview, see IJzerman & Koole, 2011). Furthermore, bodies also "become cultural" as different postures in different cultural groups show different sets of meaning (IJzerman & Cohen, 2011). Though my research is anchored in experimental social psychology, it is also inspired by anthropological work (see Fiske, 1992).
Finally, I am the founding editor of In-Mind Magazine, a peer-reviewed magazine focused on presenting social psychology as a mature science to a larger audience, with in-depth but entertaining articles:
